It has long been said that curtains can really transform a room. When buying new curtains therefore it is important to spend money on exactly what you want for your home and there are countless things to think about to make sure that this happens. To ensure that you purchase your dream curtains here are our top 5 things to consider.

  1. Fabric
One of the most important things to think about is the fabric that your curtains will be made out of. Firstly, this is for aesthetical reasons. You should consider the colour and design you would like your curtains to have as well as the weight of the fabric because this will determine how well they hang and how crisply they are drawn. Moreover, there are also practical considerations you should think about when buying new curtains as the fabric will dictate how curtains will fare over time. Bright colours for example may fade quickly. You may also want to think about the thickness of the fabric in order to keep out the cold or to block light more effectively.
  2. Lining
Considering what sort of lining you want with your curtains is also an essential consideration. Many linings give a more luxurious feel to the curtains whilst others function to block out sun. Some people also consider a blackout lining option, especially in children’s rooms. On the other hand, you could opt for no lining at all and in fact go for sheer curtains. This allows natural daylight whilst also giving you the privacy you need.
  3. Length
The length that you require your curtains is another thing to think about. It is important that you first consider how high you wish to hang your curtains. Many people decide to hang their curtains around 6 inches or more above their windows in order to give a sense of height to the room or make a dramatic statement. Then you must decide how long you wish your curtains to be. For a more traditional look, people often opt to have the fabric pooling on the floor whilst people looking to achieve a more modern design position their curtains so they just brush the floor. This more modern look is a far more low maintenance option, especially if they are positioned 1 cm above the floor avoiding all dirt.
  4. Curtain pole or tracks
Another decision to make is whether you want to hang your curtains using a curtain pole or track. The former allows for more of a feature and there are a huge variety of different curtain poles for you to choose from to fit any room. Curtain tracks are often more subtle and are also a hugely popular option.
  5. Pelmets
A pelmet, also sometimes called a ‘cornice board’, is a framework placed above a window often used to conceal curtain fixtures and is another consideration to think about when buying new curtains. Many people opt for them as they are the perfect finishing touch for any room and have a fabulous decorative effect. If you decide on pelmets you will need to consider the height and depth of the pelmet.

Choosing the right curtains for your room entails a lot of decision making but deciding bespoke made to measure curtains with an experienced designer ensures the process goes far more smoothly.
